These programs were part of Mentoring Valuable Proteges' series of literacy clinics The initiative derived from our organizational mission to use sports as a catalyst to impact youth positively in personal development, health, and discipline. Designed to raise awareness and improve literacy rates through interpersonal interaction,
these clinics fell under the academic pillar of our mission, using the kids’ love of basketball to meet our other important goals. Our two-part youth basketball and family literacy event in partnership with the NBA Miami Heat saw boys and girls aged five to eighteen participating in a two-hour instructional clinic on the Miami Heat court to make the program enticing.
Then, legendary basketball coach turned author Mike Jarvis served as a special guest, coaching teamwork and skill development, but also sharing his passion for literacy, community, and God. Everyone in attendance received an autographed copy of his book Everybody Needs a Head Coach. The program concluded with participants and their families receiving complimentary Miami Heat tickets, enabling them to experience fun, fellowship, reading, and hoops in true Miami Heat MVP fashion. The WNBA’s Atlanta Dream and NBA Champion and Alumnus Wali Jones are examples of the other organizations and individuals we partnered with on these literacy clinics. These experiences provided opportunities for the youth to hone their skills while encouraging them and their families to read. YOU CAN EXPECT THE SAME PASSION IN MY PROGRAM WITH TOUCHDOWN GOD
LEE BENNETT
HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
My name is Lee Bennett. I am from Leesburg Florida. I love football. Graduated from Leesburg High School with a full ride scholarship to play football at Mercer University in Macon, GA. At Mercer I accumulated many awards for sports and earned my BA in Finance with a Minor in Management.

After graduating college, I had the opportunity to play professional football in Canada. The team I played for was the BC Lions in the CFL. After retiring, I returned to my hometown, Leesburg, looking for work and found passion in helping the youth.
So I started training football players ages 5 and up. It became a passion of mine and stemmed from my understanding of how important this game of football is to a young kid that grew up in the same area I grew up in. Leading and inspiring others was always my thing so I started using football to help mold young boys into men, teaching them life principles that would last a lifetime. And it still gives me great joy to see the growth of these kids over the years.
